Motivation is defined as something that can inspire you to work hard and achieve your dreams. Many people are always out looking for it; googling for ideas and motivational quotes as a way to get started. But, motivation is a fickle mistress. She appears according to her whims and fancies, something that we can’t deal with on a daily basis. As a student, or even on a daily basis, how many of us can really wait for her to appear?
Achieving academic success is something that every student strives for. Being at the top of the class, the cream of the crop, and receiving award after award; who wouldn’t want the fame and recognition? Being intelligent in an academic aspect equals to respect from your teachers and peers. Indirectly, it also equals to being worth something in society. In a dog eat dog world, nobody needs another average Joe walking the streets. Everybody is fighting to be the next Mark Zukerburg or the next Bill Gates, so who are you if you can’t even do basic math?
The truth is, the only person who can possibly motivate you to study is you. Advice from your parents is something that you’ll always receive, like it or not, but that doesn’t equate to motivation. The drive you require to do something doesn’t come from someone else, it comes from yourself. Hearing advice might be something that you like but at the end of the day, you’ll just end up as someone with all bark and no bite.
Studying is something that cannot be forced. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot force it to drink. Taking someone’s advice and actually implementing it are two very different things. Without your own determination and hard work, motivation is not going to get you anywhere. You cannot work at your own pace while waiting for motivation to appear, you’ll never get anything done; especially when you’re a student in a busy world. The universe doesn’t stop to wait for you while you hang around waiting for motivation to appear.
Being a student is not easy but developing self-discipline and good habits are more important than anything motivation can offer you. Motivation can only give you the push you need to get started; it does not give you the power to hop over every hurdle that comes your way. Discipline is more important than you think; it helps you ensure you’re doing the most beneficial things all the time. Your productivity should not be affected by your mood, which is why discipline is more important than motivation.
