Strange Encounter (Part 1)

It was a strange encounter. Night had fallen as I was trudging my way back from my good friend, Lily's home. The owls were hooting as I walked past, creating an unnerving atmosphere. It truly felt like something out of a horror novel. Either way, I didn't pick up my pace for it was a serene night. Lily, conveniently named by her mother's best friend who adored her flower counterpart, had offered to walk me home. I had declined the offer even though she knew these winding paths much better than I. She had mentioned that her mother was dropping by for a visit and I wished not to disturb their small reunion. It was not often her mother could visit, I didn't want to intrude. Lily had moved to the far outskirts, hoping to get away from the hustle and bustle of the village. It was a wonderful decision she deemed but she was often all alone. Perhaps she liked it best that way, I could not say.

The full moon shone brightly overhead as I continued my ardous journey home.  The dirt path that I followed led to the village where I lived alone. It was not that I was an ungrateful child who had abandoned her elderly parents in search of a new beginning, rather, I had no parents to return to. They had died when I was very much younger; drowned when the barge they were travelling in had capsized. The villagers were kind enough to look after me, knowing well that my parents were wonderful people. We never had much it seemed but my parents were often helping others in whatever way they were most capable of. Whether it was sewing up a new coat or sending some harvest to the neighbours, they were more than willing to give. There was a saying that was true enough in my case, 'it takes a village to raise a child'.
